Twin Cam 96ci Engine Specs

The Twin Cam 96Ci is a high-powered engine produced by Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. The engine was released in 2007 and, according to Harley-Davidson, the Twin Cam system provides cleaner burning and improved engine performance. The Twin Cam 96 engine replaced the Twin Cam 88, which was produced between 1999 and 2006.

Engine Specifications

The Twin Cam 96Ci produces 1,584 cubic centimeters, or 96 cubic inches, of piston displacement. Using 25-degree fuel injector nozzles, the engine features an improved electronic fuel injection system that more efficiently atomizes fuel and target sprays gasoline to enhance running performance in a variety of temperatures and climates, and provides for smoother starts. To increase power output over the Twin 88, the stroke ratio is increased from 4 inches to 4.38 inches in the Twin 96. Torque is approximately 90 foot-pounds, a 17 percent improvement over the Twin Cam 88.

Equipment

A new feature on the engine are oxygen sensors, which improve performance and efficiency and negate the need for catalytic converters in the U.S. The transmission is a six-speed, and the new six-gear reduces highway revs by 11 percent over the previous model transmission. The new primary-drive system has an automatic-adjustable chain tensioner design. Harley-Davidson claims the new carbon-fiber drive belt is 30 percent stronger and more narrow. The multi-piece camshaft is lighter and more durable than the older engine, while the hydrostatic cam bearings have a less complex design to increase weight carrying capabilities as well as improve durability.

History and Models

According to Harley-Davidson, the Twin 96 engine is next in line in over 100 years of Harley-Davidson engine history. The Twin Cam 96 is evolved, yet carries on the legacy of the Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution and Twin Cam 88 engine that came before. Upon its release in 2007, the Twin 96 was available on Harley-Davidson touring, Softail and Dyna motorcycles. The bolt-on Screamin' Eagle 103ci Big Bore Kit increases engine displacement from 96ci to 103ci and is available for select Harley-Davidson models.
