Repair A Rotating Ball Kitchen Faucet

Repair your ball faucet in a few steps.

The rotating ball kitchen faucet, or ball valve faucet has a ball and stem mechanism inside the handle. This rolls back and forth, opening and closing two valves inside the faucet head to allow hot, cold or a mix of the two to flow out the spout. This entire assembly is replaceable, and when the faucet leaks or under-performs, it is usually due to wear on this part alone. Replacing it is the best way to fix this problem.

Instructions

1. Shut off the water to the faucet by closing both valves under the sink.

2. Loosen the set screw located on the ball faucet's handle with an 1/8 inch Allen wrench. Slide the handle off the stem of the ball valve.

3. Place the tip of a screwdriver into the slot in the washer on the faucet head and push it to the left to loosen it. Remove the dome nut (rounded part under the faucet handle) by turning it to the left with a pair of large pliers.

4. Pull out the ball valve and seat springs, which are small, round rubber gaskets inside the faucet head. Use the tip of the Allen wrench to lift them out.

5. Install new seat gaskets coated in plumber's grease in place of the old ones. Then install the new ball valve inside the faucet head.

6. Replace the washer and tighten it by hand to secure the ball valve. Replace the dome nut and tighten this by hand. Then install the handle by sliding it over the ball valve stem and tightening up the set screw with the Allen wrench.
