Xeloda Side Effects

Xeloda is chemotherapy drug used to treat some types of breast, colorectal and colon cancer. It is an oral chemotherapy drug taken by mouth, typically twice a day, which is more convenient for patients because it requires fewer visits to doctors' offices and clinics. Xeloda works by interfering with the production of the types of proteins cancer cells need to grow. Because of how Xeloda works, it may not be an appropriate treatment option for people with certain kidney conditions.

Pain

Some Xeloda patients may develop back, joint, muscle or stomach pain as a side effect of the medicine. These are normal responses and no cause for concern. The development chest pain or pain, sores or redness in the throat or mouth, however, could indicate a potentially serious complication that requires treatment.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

Mild nausea, vomiting and stomach pain may develop in some Xeloda patients, and it is no cause for concern. Severe nausea, vomiting and stomach pain should be reported to your doctor immediately, as should black or tarry stools and bloody diarrhea.

Known neurological side effects of Xeloda include headaches and dizziness, but these are no cause for concern. Contact your doctor immediately, however, if you develop mood or mental changes or vision changes.

Non-Serious Side Effects

Other side effects of Xeloda that may occur in some patients include constipation, fatigue, dry or itchy skin, eye irritation, difficulty sleeping, weakness, loss of appetite and changes to the way foods taste.
