Have A Veneer Replaced

Have a Veneer Replaced

The type of veneer you have will dictate how you have it replaced. Resin veneers and Lumineers can be easily replaced, since they are considered temporary and are bonded to the tooth with a lighter cement. Da Vinci and other types of porcelain veneers may need more extensive preparation before they can be safely removed and replaced.

Instructions

1. Have your old veneer removed. If the veneer is being replaced because it broke or chipped and cannot be fixed, the procedure will likely be done over a single visit. If, however, you need to have several veneers replaced because you require a new full set or because you desire a different type, you may need to return over a period of several weeks.

2. Be prepared for your dentist to recommend gingival (gum) recontouring. The procedure involves the removal of gum tissue so that the new veneers will fit properly without exposing the roots of your teeth or the cement used to bond the veneer. Gum recontouring is a surgical procedure and may require some recovery time before the veneers can be replaced.

3. Make a second appointment to have all cement and bonding material removed. Depending on the type of materials used, this may involve deep polishing of the teeth using a diamond-edged burr or similar tool. A deep cleaning and scaling may also be needed.

4. Have new impressions taken. Because the removal of the veneers will affect the surface of the tooth, you will need to be measured and fitted again to ensure a proper fit. Depending on whether your dentist's office has its own laboratory or not, you may need to wait until the next appointment to have the new veneers permanently bonded.

5. Come back one last time to receive your new veneers. This procedure will be no different than the first time you received veneers, so don't worry about any unpleasant surprises. Once the veneers have been fitted over your teeth, they will be permanently bonded with cement and the use of a special bonding light.
