Trigger Points & Pain Relief

Trigger points, otherwise known as acupressure points, are designated points along the body that are activated by pressing or rubbing in particular ways. According to ancient Eastern medicine, the body is mapped according to these pressure points which, when activated, can increase "chi" or energy. This is accomplished by increasing blood flow to the designated area. Trigger points are easily found when pain is present by the sensitivity of the point, which should be rubbed in a circular fashion.

Migraine Pain Relief

Migraine headaches can be debilitating, leaving a person extremely sensitive to light, with trouble focusing her eyes and even making her nauseous. Though the origin of migraine headaches is not confirmed, it is believed in Chinese medicine to be associated with improper liver function with pain centering around the eyes. Key points to relieve a migraine are in the "V" between the thumb and pointer finger deep in the muscle. Another prominent point to relieve a migraine is approximately a thumb and a half up the forearm from the most prominent protrusion on the inside wrist.

Back Pain Relief

There are many points located in the body to help alleviate back pain depending on the cause of the pain and location in the back. For lower back pain, find the point in the valley behind the ankle bone protrusion. If a person is experiencing middle back pain, the point located between the thumb and pointer finger used for migraines is very helpful. For upper back pain, a person can utilize the point halfway between the shoulder and the neck on the muscle.

Abdominal Pain Relief

Menstrual cramps can be very painful. The following points are great triggers to relieve indigestion, constipation and menstrual pain. Approximately one hand length below the belly button is the first point to use to relieve abdominal pain. A second one is about two thumb widths below that. Another point is found below the crease of the inside of the wrist lined up with the middle finger about two thumbs down. This point can even alleviate nausea from sea sickness and motion sickness.
