Survive Grief And Loss

Survive Grief and Loss

When dealing with a grief or loss situation it's easy to be overwelmed by our emotions and feelings. It's important to take these steps to help you get through this difficult time in your life.Grief and loss can occur from numerous situations: the loss of a pet, job, illness, body part (such as a breast), divorce, or death of a friend or loved one. Over time and with the support of loved ones and friends you can help yourself to recover and take back your life.

Instructions

1. Feel Your Feelings

Talk and share with others about how you feel. Know that all the feelings you have are "normal." Be prepared for a wide range of feelings and emotions. You may feel: shock, anger, frustration, fear, disbelief, confusion, depression and more. Share memories with others about happier times. Tell the story about your grief and loss situation over and over again.

2. Keep a Journal

Record your thoughts and feelings on paper. Write about the highs and lows of each day. Be honest about what you're feeling. A journal will become a trusted friend. Later, when you look back at it you will be able to see the progress on your journey to survival.

3. Be Good to Yourself

Take time for yourself each day to do something that you enjoy. Pamper yourself (with a soak in the tub, or a good book). Don't feel gulity for enjoying life. Take one moment, one day at a time (you can get through the next moment or the next 24 hours).Love yourself and become your own best friend.

4. Take Care of Your Health

Take good care of yourself physically by making sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Eat properly three meals a day is best (if you don't feel like eating, snack on nutricious food frequently). Try to do some form of exercise each day;even if its going for a short walk around the block. Laughter is good medicine; watch a funny movie or read a humorous book.

5. Seek Out Help if you Need it

If you feel depressed or stuck in your recovery talk to a mental health professional: clergy, social worker, counselor, or a life coach. They will be able to help you move forward in your life by giving you an objective person to talk with and offering help and suggestions that you may not have thought of.
