Herbal Treatment Of Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy can cause pain and numbness in the extremities.

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition in which the nerves in the peripheral nervous system, usually in the lower legs and forearms, are damaged. It results in chronic pain and loss of feeling in the hands, feet, arms and legs. There are a number of herbs that are used in natural medicine and by traditional Chinese medical practitioners for the condition.

Chinese Herbs

The herbs used include Rhizoma atractylodis, Radix gentianae macrophyllae, Fructus tribuli, Semen coicis, Radix achyranthis bidentatae, Cortex phellodendri, Herba cistanches, Fructus chaenomelis and Cortex magnoliae officinalis. Most Chinese medical treatments are a combination of herbs, so it's important to consult a Chinese medical practitioner before trying them. Combinations often include different herbs that work together in a synergistic fashion.

Western Herbal Remedies

The University of Maryland Medical Center lists several natural substances as having a positive effect on peripheral neuropathy. Those substances are cayenne pepper, evening primrose, gamma-linolenic acid, omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin E and vitamin H (also known as biotin). Cayenne pepper was used for thousands of years by Native Americans both as a spice and as medicine, mainly because of its pain-relieving properties. Gamma-linolenic acid is one of the omega-6 fatty acids. Although it's important for health, the body can not manufacture it, so it must be taken via dietary sources. In addition to suppliments, omega-6 fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid, are found in many foods, including salmon and cod.

Detoxifying Herbs

Although the precise cause of most cases of peripheral neuropathy can't be pinpointed, naturopath Amy Bader suspects that some cases may be both caused and aggravated by a buildup of toxins in the body. Herbs or dietary practices designed to reduce body toxicity also may help with the condition.
