Signs A Root Canal Is Needed

Many people encounter dental problems that require a root canal as a solution. Only a dentist can truly assess whether you need this procedure. You can watch for symptoms, however, that suggest a root canal may be in order.

Root Canal Definition

Teeth are filled with pulp, which contains nerves and supplies the teeth with nutrients. Pulp tissue may become injured and/or diseased, which eventually can result in the death of the pulp. Death of the pulp can lead to infection--which, if left untreated, can cause you to lose the tooth. In order to save the tooth, a dentist can remove the pulp, clean the root canal, and put a cap over the tooth for extra protection and strength.

Symptom 1

Pain is the first indicator that you might need a root canal. If you have a persistent pain in or near a tooth, contact your dentist. Tenderness and swelling along with the pain also point to a problem.

Symptom 2

Another sign that a root canal may be necessary is the presence of a pimple-like growth on your gum. You also may notice a bad taste in your mouth. This is because the lesion is serving as a drain and releasing infection from inside the tooth.

Symptom 3

If you suffer some type of injury to your mouth and teeth, you may need a root canal in the future. Tooth damage received by means of some sort of trauma can lead to decay. If you injure your teeth, your dentist can monitor the possibility of further damage through your regular check-ups.

Diagnosis

If you experience one or more of these symptoms, visit your dentist for a diagnosis, treatment and dental X-rays. If the X-rays show a dark spot at the root of one of your teeth, it may be a sign of decay. At this point you can discuss further evaluation and treatment with your dentist.
