Physical Effects Of Alcohol On Women

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, women metabolize alcohol differently than men. Women weigh less than men and have less water in their bodies. Since alcohol is diluted by the water in the body, one drink affects a woman more than it does a man.

Breast Cancer

The risk of breast cancer increases for even moderate drinkers. The link between breast cancer and alcohol has been found in females who drink as little as one alcoholic beverage a day.

Considerations

Intoxication occurs quicker in women than men.

Depression

Researchers found that women who drink heavily are more likely to suffer from depression.

Liver Damage

Women are more likely to die from cirrhosis of the liver than men. Alcohol causes alcoholic hepatitis that destroys the liver.

Brain Damage

Heavy alcohol use can change the physical size of the brain and its chemistry. Women are more likely than men to suffer from brain damage because of heavy alcohol use.

Heart Disease

Women are more likely to suffer from heart disease caused by heavy drinking.

Impaired Driving

Since women are more quickly affected by alcohol then men, they risk impaired driving after as little as one drink.
