Teenage depression is a serious condition that affects many young adults. Teenagers, unlike adults, must rely on others to recognize their depression and get them the help that they need, so learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of teenage depression can be crucial.








Recognizing Teenage Depression


Warning signs of teenage depression are often mistaken for normal teenage behavior. When, however, mood swings, personality changes, changes in eating and sleeping habits, and feelings of hopelessness and sadness begin to interfere with everyday life, depression is usually the cause.


Causes


There are many possible causes of depression in teenagers, from a response to stressful situations or a traumatic event to increased hormone levels as part of the normal process of puberty. Whatever the underlying cause, depression in both adults and teenagers can have serious consequences, from anger and hostility towards others to thoughts of suicide, if left untreated. When trying to evaluate a teenager's symptoms, ask yourself how long these symptoms have been present and how much they interfere with the teenager's daily life.


Symptoms


Symptoms of depression in teenagers are similar to symptoms of adult depression, with some important differences. Social withdrawal, changes in eating and sleeping habits, dramatic mood swings and preoccupation with death and/or suicide are common in both adults and teens, but many teenagers, instead of appearing sad and withdrawn, often become irritable and aggressive as a result of depression.


Treatment


There are several different types of treatment methods for teenage depression. The most common involves a combination of therapy and medication. Before depression can be treated, however, it must be diagnosed. If suspect that you or your teenager may be suffering from depression, make an appointment with your family doctor or with a therapist. If you or your child is diagnosed with depression, the doctor will discuss treatment options with you to come up with the best solution.


Moving Forward


While undergoing treatment for depression, both adults and teenagers will benefit from having a strong support system. In addition, keeping therapy appointments, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough exercise and sleep are all important things that anyone can do for themselves to stay healthy and help combat depression.
