Types Of Braces For Adults

Adult orthodontic patients have several options to consider; they don't have to settle for the metal braces worn by their peers when they were teens. The option they choose may be affected by such factors as cost, tooth color, the severity of the misalignment of their teeth and how obvious they want their treatment to be.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are one of several options the adult orthodontic patient can choose. These are the least expensive option, but they carry the drawback of being obvious when you open your mouth or smile; their visibility may be one of the reasons you never received orthodontic treatment as a teenager. Most metal braces have a wire that is held in place with tiny rubber bands called "ligature bands." These bands come in several colors and you can choose colors to suit your needs.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic brackets, made of composite materials, are a very strong option for the adult orthodontic patient; you might decide to go with this option because the ceramic usually does not stain. In addition, the ceramic blends with your tooth color, which makes them harder to spot. The ligature bands are clear or white; unlike the ceramic brackets, the ligature bands can stain. If you drink coffee or red wine, or if you eat foods spiced with curry, you could find the ligatures taking on the color of the beverage or food. In general, this does not pose a problem. The ligature bands are changed when the wire is changed.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are cemented behind the teeth, which poses one definite disadvantage. As you try to talk, you can cut your tongue and have a very difficult time speaking. Orthodontists must be specially trained to apply these braces; not every orthodontist offers this option. One advantage is that the brackets are invisible to anyone you meet; your friends and colleagues won't know you are undergoing orthodontic treatment unless you tell them.

Invisalign Braces

If you are interested in the Invisalign option, you should not have significant orthodontic issues. Rather than being made out of traditional brackets with wire and ligature bands, these "braces" are actually rubber trays that are computer-fabricated specifically for your individual needs. As your treatment progresses, you receive a new orthodontic tray that will further move your teeth into their optimal placement. You also must be very committed to your treatment since it is completely up to you to wear your orthodontic tray when you are not eating or brushing and flossing your teeth.

Clear Sapphire Braces

These braces, which are made of monocrystalline sapphire, are very clear. Since they are translucent, they seem to "disappear" on the patient's teeth. If you have very white teeth, this is an excellent option; if your teeth aren't fully white, you might be better served with the ceramic brackets. The advantages and disadvantages for these braces are the same as for ceramic brackets.
