Folk Remedies For Asthma

Asthma can be a troublesome and dangerous ailment that should always be diagnosed and treated by a physician. The feeling of not being able to breathe well can lead into a full-blown asthma attack, which is even more alarming. Some folk remedies for asthma may prevent an attack or alleviate its symptoms.

Change Diet

Some foods can aggravate asthma and lead to attacks. Recognizing and eliminating these foods from your diet is effective to promote better breathing. These triggers will differ from person to person, but the most common foods that can cause severe asthma attacks include dairy products, nuts and seafood.

Exercise

Regular exercise, such as walking, aerobics or swimming, done for 30 minutes a day, at least three times a week can strengthen lungs, which will help relieve the symptoms of asthma. Start slowly and work up to adding more time and days to avoid asthma attacks.

Avoid Acid Reflux

Acid reflux can exacerbate asthma, especially at night. Stomach acids can back up into the esophagus through the mouth, then go down into airways, irritating the windpipe. To prevent this, avoid eating anything right before bed. Antacids can be taken before going to sleep to help reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. Elevating the head of the bed can also be effective in keeping acid in the stomach, where it belongs.

Yoga

Yoga involves breathing techniques that can help strengthen lungs and open airways, helping to lessen the severity of attacks.

One such technique learned from yoga involves closing your eyes and focusing on natural breathing. Inhale and exhale naturally, then inhale again after a 2 second pause. This pause will allow your exhalation to complete in a natural way.
