Prevent Nearsightedness

It may have been funny when it happened to Mr. Magoo, but it’s not funny when it happens to you. The impairment of eyesight can be a severe inconvenience and may even be deadly when operating cars or heavy machinery. There is no widely accepted means for preventing myopia, or nearsightedness.

Instructions

Prevent Nearsightedness

1. Try not to read for extreme lengths of time. Whether it’s for the love of books or because you are cramming for a test that just happens to be tomorrow, try pacing yourself. This means either prying yourself away from a page-turner or counteracting procrastination by starting your studies a few days earlier. If prolonged reading can’t be avoiding, try taking regular breaks to rest your eyes or take a nap.

2. Consume lots of eye-healthy vitamins. Of course the first veggie that comes to mind is the carrot. It’s the classic ploy to get kids everywhere chomping down on the healthy orange treats. Still, good doses of multi-vitamins will not only improve your eyesight but will improve your health in general.

3. Do your reading or focusing in a well-lit room. Dim light may cause damage to your eyes and result in the need for glasses. It will also give you a headache and cause you to become tired. Invest in a reading light or just simply turn on a lamp.

4. Be mindful of the distance of your eyes and the object you’re focusing on. Whether it’s a book or the television, being too close is going to bother your eyes. It will also, as in Step 3, cause your head to ache and may dry out your eyes.

5. Talk to an eye care professional at the first signs of eye trouble. Early detection of nearsightedness can lead to quick treatment and possibly less severe symptoms.
