Grow Malagueta Pimenta Racemosa

Pimenta racemosa, also known as the bay rum tree, is native to the West Indies and related to the allspice tree. This tree is small, growing to only about 20 feet in height, and it's hardy down to 26 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The leaves of the Pimenta racemosa tree are used to make bay rum or perfume. The fragrance of the leaves, caused by oil, is spicy and woody. Care of the Pimenta racemosa is similar to care of the allspice tree.

Instructions

1. Select an area with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and three times as wide. Place the Pimenta racemosa tree into the hole and fill the hole with soil.

2. Mulch around the base of the Pimenta racemosa tree with a layer 2 to 3 inches thick. Place the mulch 2 inches from the base of the tree.

3. Water the Pimenta racemosa well, at least once a week in times of no natural rainfall. Keep the soil around the tree moist at all times.

4. Apply 1 lb. of 10-10-10 fertilizer in the spring or summer to the base of the Pimenta racemosa tree and water it well.

5. Prune off any dead, damaged and diseased foliage from the Pimenta racemosa tree as it occurs.
