The mineral calcite, known also by the folk name Iceland spar, is composed of calcium carbonate. It is a semi-hard mineral with perfect rhombohedral cleavage. Some specimens are transparent, having vitreous to iridescent pearly luster, while others are translucent or opaque. Certain varieties of calcite demonstrate fluorescent properties in ultraviolet light and may be visibly thermoluminescent. Because calcite possesses the uncommon optical property of double refraction, this healing crystal mineral is often used magically to double the power of any application.

For healing physical ailments, calcite is used for kidney problems, infections and for the decalcification of joints.
