Get Rings Off Over Swollen Knuckles

Elevate a swollen ring finger before trying to remove the ring.

Removing rings from swollen knuckles is never easy. It is important to contact a physician for assistance if attempts to remove the ring are unsuccessful. Swollen knuckles are caused by excessive fluid near the joint. This can be the result of underlying medical conditions such as arthritis and gout. Swelling can also be caused by excessive salt consumption and dehydration. It is not always a sign of a serious medical condition, but it is important to contact your physician if you have any concerns.

Instructions

1. Elevate the swollen ring finger and knuckles above the level of the heart. Lay down and relax with your arm in a comfortable, elevated position. Attempt removal after five to 10 minutes of rest.

2. Attempt to reduce swelling by icing the affected knuckle. Apply an ice pack directly to the finger, or place your hand in a container of ice water. Ice the finger for five to 10 minutes before trying to remove the ring.

3. Lubricate the skin thoroughly before attempting a removal. Place the hand in cold water for two to three minutes to reduce swelling before applying grease. Apply liquid vitamin E or olive oil directly to the skin and attempt removal.

4. Place the end of a piece of thin, strong string between the ring and finger. Wrap the other end of the string tightly around the finger, covering the knuckle. Attempt to slide the ring over the finger when compressed by the tube of thread.
