Having restless legs, also known as restless-leg syndrome, is an irritating and uncomfortable condition. Restless legs usually occur when you lie down to rest at night. It can get so bad that you may have problems settling down to sleep. It can make you feel the need to get up and move around. There are different medications for the treatment of restless legs.


Propoxyphene


Propoxyphene is the generic name for this type of medication for the treatment of restless legs. The brand names include Darvon, Darvon-N and Dolene. Propoxyphene is a narcotic pain reliever which is also used as a cough suppressant. It increases pain tolerance and eases discomfort. According to the U.S. Food and Drug administration, there is an increased risk of death by overdose when using medicines that contain propoxyphene.


Tramadol


Tramadol is the generic name for the brand name Ultram. Tramadol is a synthetic pain reliever that is similar to morphine. It is available in prescription form and can be abused if the person taking it is not careful.


Clonazepam


Clonazepam is the generic name and Klonopin is the brand name for this medication. This medication is an anti-anxiety medication that can relieve restless legs by giving a calming effect. It can also help a person sleep.


Gabapentin








Gabapentin is the generic name for this drug, and Neurontin and Gabarone are the brand names. This medication is one of the most recent drugs that have been found to help ease restless legs. It is an anti-convulsant that can be used to treat seizures. Gabapentin also reduces pain.


Pramipexole


Pramipexole is also known as Mirapex. This is one of the newest medications to treat restless legs. It is also used to treat Parkinson's disease.
