The Effects Of Breast Implants

Every surgery, including breast augmentation, has side effects and potential risks. Even with the best health care and a wonderful plastic surgeon, there is no guarantee that you will be exempt from the complications that may arise when surgery takes place. However, being educated about the potential risks and being aware of the steps to take should you happen to experience some of the effects is the most beneficial way to be prepared if they do arise.

Loss of Sensation

When undergoing breast surgery, damage is done to the nerve endings in the breast area. This can lead to the loss of feeling and sensation in the breasts. Normally the loss is only for a short period of time, but there is still a risk of permanent loss of sensation.

Implant Rupturing

Women who choose to have breast implants run the risk of rupture, which can be caused by breast trauma and aging. Some women will go on to have another operation to repair the implants, while others may have them completely removed. Some pain also may be experienced when the breast implant ruptures, although it is rare.

Surgical Risks

Fever, inflammation, breast tenderness and hematoma may also occur after surgery. The risks are usually the highest right after surgery and can range from light to extremely severe. Additional surgery may also be required if hematoma occurs. Be certain to report any unusual ailments to your health care provider as soon as possible.

Capsular Contracture

A common risk associated with breast implants is capsular contracture. Capsular contracture consists of the skin around the breasts becoming hard, making the breasts look abnormal with an unusual shape. Women who choose silicone implants run the highest risk. Bacterial infections, autoimmune disorders and hematoma are also conditions that raise the risk of capsular contracture. Unfortunately though, everyone who undergoes surgery for breast implants runs the chance of developing capsular contracture whether the other conditions are present or not.

Displacement

Implants have been known to move out of place on occasion. Usually it will go unnoticed if the movement is small. If they start to move around a lot however, you may need to undergo surgery again to make sure that they are back in their original position. Most women do not experience displacement unless the implants are extremely large.

Mammography

Mammogram readings can be difficult with patients who have breast implants. The implants may obscure the signs of breast cancer because the signs are quite challenging to see. Alternatives such as MRI scans and ultrasounds are not affected though. Be certain that your health care provider knows in advance if you have breast implants.

Breast Feeding

As of today, there is insufficient evidence as to whether babies and children will suffer health problems if they are nursed by mothers with breast implants. The majority of women experience successful breastfeeding with no problems. However, since research in regards to health problems is limited at this time, there is no guarantee that breastfeeding with implants is completely safe.
