Preservatives Used In Nutrisystem

About a third of NutriSystem's pre-packaged entrees contain at least one preservative.








NutriSystem is one of the most successful weight loss programs in the United States, and is based upon a series of more than 120 pre-packaged entrees and snacks. Many of these foods contain preservatives because they do not require refrigeration.


Preservatives in NutriSystem Foods


Some of the most common preservatives found in NutriSystem Advanced foods are sorbic acid, sorbate, calcium propionate and potassium sorbate.


Amounts Used


About one-third of NutriSystem entrees contain at least one preservative. According to the company, the amount used in NutriSystem food is comparable to the amounts found in other foods.

Each entree or snack label includes a complete list of ingredients in which preservatives are clearly marked. The complete list for each food item is also listed on the NutriSystem website.


Safety & Health Issues


The preservatives found in NutriSystem foods are safe for human consumption. The company has opted not to use additives that have questionable safety, such as MSG (monosodium glutamate).
