Norvasc & Diovan Side Effects

Amlodipine, under the brand name Norvasc, and valsartan, under the brand Diovan, are two commonly prescribed medications for hypertension and angina. They often are prescribed together if one by itself is not effective. In 2007, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved a drug combining these two under the brand name Exforge. Negative side effects are usually minor and disappear quickly.

Dizziness

The most common side effect from either Norvasc or Diovan is dizziness, particularly when getting up after sitting or lying down.

Respiratory Effects

Other side effects include dry coughing, sore throat and stuffy nose.

Edema

Peripheral edema also can occur. This involves swelling of the feet, ankles or legs and sometimes hands.

Allergic Reaction

Rarely, people have an allergic reaction to Norvasc or Diovan, which can cause a rash or hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the mouth or throat.

Pregnancy Considerations

Women should not take these medications if they are pregnant, as the drugs can harm the fetus.
