Homemade Insecticide Recipe Using Neem Oil
Neem oil is a is a natural oil pressed from the seeds of the Neem tree. For centuries Neem oil has been used to treat skin ailments, fevers, and inflammation and as an insect repellent and insecticide. Neem oil doesn't contain the dangerous chemicals that commercially-prepared insecticides do and can be safely used to kill insects on your herb, spice, fruit, and vegetable gardens. Neem oil won't harm squirrels or other mammals, birds, or friendly insects such as honeybees, ladybugs, and butterflies.
Insecticide
Mix 1 quart of warm water with 2 tsp. of dish washing liquid. Slowly add 5 tsp. of Neem oil while stirring the mixture vigorously. Don't prepare more of the Neem oil insecticide than you'll need, and spray the mixture on your plants within a few hours. Once the batch is mixed, the Neem oil will start breaking down.
Fill your garden sprayer with the Neem oil insecticide.
Spray the Neem oil insecticide solution on top of all the leaves and on the undersides where insects often hide. You should also spray the Neem oil insecticide around the roots.
You can spray the Neem oil insecticide on your plants once a week until the infestation problem disappears. Spray more frequently if it rains.
Mosquito Repellent
You can make your own Neem oil mosquito repellent to apply topically. A study conducted by the Malaria Research Center in India found that Neem oil mixed with coconut oil is an effective natural repellent against mosquitoes.
Mix 5 percent Neem oil with coconut oil and massage it into your skin. Use it often if you are exposed to mosquitoes.
