The Firex 1218 smoke alarm is a basic hardwired model that relies on electric line power to function, although it features a battery for short-term, emergency back-up use. A malfunctioning Firex smoke alarm will not fulfill its duty to protect your home; moreover, the false alarm and other sounds it makes are annoying and potentially dangerous. Troubleshoot your Firex smoke alarm to discover what the problem is so it can be corrected.
Instructions
1. Trip the circuit breaker at the fuse box to discontinue power to the Firex smoke alarm if the green light is not on. Twist the alarm off the mounting base. Remove the tab connected to the wires that go into the hole from the slot in the back of the alarm. Shake a can of electrical cleaning/lubricating spray for five seconds. Spray the slot for two seconds. Reinsert the tab and twist the alarm back on the base. Restore the electric power and verify that the green light is now on.
2. Press the Smart button on the side of a Firex 1218 smoke alarm whose blue and red lights aren't blinking. Release the button once the yellow light flashes. Move away as the horn sounds for a few seconds. The blue and red lights on the alarm will now resume their once-a-minute blinking sequence that signifies the alarm is reset and operating correctly.
3. Trip the circuit breaker at the fuse box to discontinue power to the Firex smoke alarm if pressing the Smart button doesn't sound the alarm. Slide the battery compartment door on the alarm open. Remove the battery and insert a fresh battery. Close the door. Press the Smart button to sound the horn and reset the alarm.
4. Twist off the alarm cover from the smoke detector if pressing the Smart button doesn't sound the horn. Clean off the sensor alarm with a burst of compressed air. Blow out the vents in the cover with compressed air. Twist the alarm cover back on the smoke detector. Press the Smart button to sound the horn and reset the alarm.
