Clear Nasal Congestion Naturally

A saline solution can thin out mucus in your nasal cavity.

Swollen tissues and blood vessels and an increase of mucus in your nasal cavity typically result in nasal congestion. However, various factors could be causing the uncomfortable condition, including flu, the common cold and allergic reactions. While nasal congestion is rarely a life-threatening problem, it could arise along with other uncomfortable symptoms, such as difficulty breathing and sinus pressure headaches. You can ease congestion at home using a variety of methods aside from medication.

Instructions

1. Hydrate your body. Drinking water will reduce the thickness of mucus buildup, allowing you to clear your nose more easily.

2. Boil 16 ounces of water in a pot on the stove. Breathe in the steam, which will thin out your mucus while easing the inflammation.

3. Allow the boiled water to cool; stir in 1 teaspoon salt. Using a neti pot, apply the solution to each nostril to clear your nasal passages.

4. Set up a humidifier or vaporizer in your room. These devices keep the air moist, which helps increase the flow of congestion.

5. Dampen a wash cloth with warm water. Place it on your face as you lie down with your head propped up on a pillow. The warm moisture will loosen the congestion, and the elevation of your head will aid in drainage.
