Vaporizer Techniques

A vaporizer humidifier moistens the air to relieve cold symptoms like congestion, dry throat, mouth or nose, or dry, itchy skin. Most vaporizer humidifiers suggest that the affected person keep a 4-foot distance from the hot steam or cool mist. Adding vaporizing medicines can improve breathing by improving the therapeutic effect of the vaporizer.

An herbal vaporizer, however, extracts and vaporizes the active herbal ingredients and, when inhaled through a mouthpiece, enters the bloodstream through the alveoli in the lungs. This method is quicker than other drug-delivery methods like ingestion and smoking (vaporizing is also safer than smoking because the user avoids the harmful toxins created when herbs are burned). For these reasons, many choose vaporizing for aromatherapy, nutrition or medicinal purposes. The desired effects of an herbal vaporizer can be maximized with proper techniques.

Hydration

Emphasizing the importance of hydration in vaporizing, Fay Prinsky, a saleswoman with 20 years of health product experience, points out, "Just as drinking fluids affects the digestive process, the skin and the body's ability to absorb vitamins and minerals, drinking plenty of water prior to using a vaporizer changes the efficiency with which your body absorbs the vapors." Hence, ingesting sufficient amounts of water one hour before vaporizer use allows the body to better absorb and transfer active herbal ingredients for the desired effect.

Breathing

Proper breathing techniques will also help maximize the vaporizer's effect. First, exhale completely then take a small series of deep breaths. Approach the vaporizer's mouthpiece and fill the lungs about two-thirds with vapor. Hold for a few seconds, then draw the last breath. Hold the breath for as long as comfortable, followed by slowly exhaling through the nose.

Grinding Herbs

Grinding is another important technique. When the herbs are finely ground, more active ingredients are released, which creates a more dense and concentrated vapor. Herb vaporizer manufactures suggest you grind plant materials using an herb grinder, but a coffee grinder will also work. If neither are available, use scissors or your fingers, breaking and crushing herbs until the clumps are gone.
