Easy Steps To Report Abuse In The Nursing Home

Placing a loved one in a nursing home is a difficult decision that requires planning and research. Before placing anybody in a facility you can review results of its most recent inspection. Nursing homes are required to undergo annual inspections and post the results where they can be read by staff, visitors or residents. You may also check a nursing home's rating and review any complaints launched against it. Medicare provides this information online or you may visit your local Department of Senior Services to obtain the information.

Prevention and Resolution

Visit your loved one in the facility often and watch for signs of abuse or neglect. Bedsores, untreated cuts and unexplained bruises shouldn't be ignored. Take note if your loved one is depressed, unclean or withdrawn. Visit at varying times throughout the day and don't announce your visits. That will help you see whether the situation has been fixed. If not, notify the head of the nursing home. Keep records of your suspicions. Discuss your suspicions with nursing home staff. Consult your loved one's doctor if you suspect injury. Each state also has an appointed ombudsman who acts as a mediator between nursing home facilities and state agencies. Contact him to resolve issues.

Emergency Hotline

Call an emergency hotline for abuse of the elderly if you suspect abuse in a nursing home and your attempts to talk to staff do not succeed. A vulnerable adult is unable to protect himself against abuse and may need your help. Every state has an agency in charge of receiving complaints related to abuse of elderly people. You can find its toll-free number in the government section of your phone book. An investigation must ensue within 24 hours of the call.

Police

If you witness an incident of abuse, your best recourse is to call the police. Simply dial 911 and tell the dispatcher what you saw. The police will respond and take the proper action.

Abuse is on the rise as the senior population increases. Do not hesitate to contact the proper authorities if you suspect abuse or neglect.
