Made Rosehip Oil

When a rose loses all of its petals, you are left with is what is known as a rose hip. Rose hips are high in vitamin C and edible, but most people use rose hips to make rose hip oil. Rose hip oil is believed to help with scaring (acne, surgeries), burns, dry damaged skin and to reduce the size and depth of wrinkles, though there is no scientific evidence to back up these claims. Making rose hip oil is easy. Make the oil on the weekend as it is an all-day process.

Instructions

1. Clean your rose hips by removing any dirt, debris or stems. You don't need to wash the rose hips, simply pick away any foreign matter. You can collect rose hips from your own garden or purchase them in specialty shops. For this recipe you can use fresh or dried rose hips.

2. Turn your small slow cooker on and place on a low heat setting. Placing your slow cooker on high could burn the rose hips, leaving you with a mess and a product that is not usable.

3. Place your rose hips into your slow cooker and pour in your 2 cups of almond oil. Mix well with your long handled wooden spoon. You can find almond oil in most health food stores. If for some reason you cannot find almond oil, you can use vegetable or olive oil in its place.

4. Place the lid back on the slow cooker and cook for eight hours. Stir with your wooden spoon once every hour for the first five hours, then once every 30 minutes from there on out. You can squish the rose hips with your wooden spoon to help break them apart.

5. Turn the heat off the slow cooker and place your measuring glass in the sink. Placing the glass in the sink will make for easy clean up if there is a spill.

6. Fold your cheesecloth in half and lay over the top of the measuring cup. Cheese cloth can be purchased at most grocery stores as well as health food stores and craft stores. If you cannot find cheese cloth, try using gauze.

7. Pour the mixture over the cheese cloth and into the measuring cup. The cheesecloth will help to strain any bits of solid material so all that you are left with is the oil. Remember the oil will be quite hot--take care not to burn yourself.
