Acupressure For Si Joint Pain

Acupressure is sometimes used to relieve sacroiliac joint pain.

The sacroiliac---or SI---joint is where the sacrum (tailbone) and the ilium (hip bone) meet. It is a large joint located low on the back, around the waistline. Because it bears the most mechanical stress, it is also one of the most common causes of back pain. Acupressure is sometimes prescribed for SI joint pain relief.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese therapy used to relieve tension and pain in the body. This method of healing works on the principle that any blockage of energy flow in the body can cause pain and illnesses.

Use of Hands

Hands are commonly used to exert pressure on affected areas to bring relief.

Acupressure Points

A specially trained practitioner can locate the acupressure points by feeling for them. These points are usually tender to the touch. The specialist may also use special charts to locate the points.

Function

Once the acupressure points on the SI joint area are located, the specialist will apply pressure to release blocked channels of energy flow to bring about pain relief.

Effects

Once blocked channels are unblocked, blood circulation improves. This helps to relieve muscle tension associated with SI joint pain.
