Side Effects Of Librium

While some anxiety is perfectly natural, high anxiety can disrupt everyday life. Luckily, Librium helps quell anxious feelings. Although there are some side effects of Librium, such as oversedation and ataxia, these are generally mild. Still, it is important to know the side effects before starting the medication.

Jaundice

In rare cases, Librium has affected the liver function of the patient, causing jaundice. Jaundice causes a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Physicians can perform liver function tests to determine whether you may be at risk for this side effect.

Oversedation

One of the biggest problems related to Librium is oversedation. This happens when a patient is prescribed a dosage that is too high. This especially occurs with elderly or debilitated patients, as well as children. In most cases, this can be cured by changing to a smaller dose. There have been some cases in which even the smallest dose caused oversedation. In such a case, a visit to the doctor would be necessary to evaluate whether the patient should stay on Librium.

Ataxia and Confusion

While patients taking Librium should avoid using heavy machinery, ataxia and confusion is not a healthy side effect. Ataxia occurs when there is a lack of coordination. Patients may fall over or have a hard time doing simple tasks. Confusion is also a side effect of Librium. Physicians will lessen the dosage to see if that helps, or they may have to halt the use of the medication entirely.

Menstrual Irregularities

Some female patients have found that their menstrual cycle becomes irregular while they are using Libirum. In most cases, this side effect is mild enough to be tolerated. It is rare for a patient to cease use of Librium if experiencing menstrual irregularities. If it becomes an important issue, consult a doctor.

Libido Fluctuations

In rare cases, those taking Librium have a fluctuation in their libido. This can go both ways, causing either an increase or decrease in libido. For some patients, an increase or decrease in libido is a welcome side effect, but this isn't the case for everyone. If symptoms persist in a negative way, consult a physician.
