200 Hour Yoga Certification

The program of study for the 200-hour level yoga certification covers the fundamentals of yoga and its teaching.


To obtain certification to become a registered yoga teacher at the 200-hour level, you must complete a specific program of study covering the fundamentals of yoga and its teachings. The standards for both the 200-hour yoga certification program and the schools offering the training are overseen by the Yoga Alliance, a nonprofit, tax-exempt section 501(c)(3) organization.


Certification Training: Techniques and Practice


The 200-hour Yoga Alliance certification training requirements include instruction in basic techniques such as asanas, pranayamas, kriyas, chanting and meditation. This training focuses on a combination of teach and practice the techniques and actual guided practice of the techniques. Yoga students learn the fundamentals of demonstrating a variety positions, as well assisting and correcting students. The curriculum may include at least five hours of instruction dealing with the business aspects of teaching yoga.


Certification Training: Anatomy, Physiology and Ethics


The methodological and practical instruction includes components focusing on human physical anatomy and physiology, covering topics such as bodily systems, chakras and specific organs. Training also addresses contraindications required when there are injuries as well as the beneficial and health movement patterns for specific conditions. The emphasis within this component is on an understanding of musculoskeletal systems and structures, issues of safety, joint movement and range of motion. Certification instruction also covers yoga philosophies, yoga lifestyle and ethics of teaching yoga.


Registered Yoga Schools Offering Training


The Yoga Alliance registered yoga schools component offers yoga training for the 200-hour level certification across the U.S. in more than 900 locations. All 200 hours of training must take place at one school. If you completed a 200-hour level certification course at a nonregistered yoga school, you may still be able to register with Yoga Alliance. You must submit the "Registered Yoga Teacher" ( RYT) graduate of an nonregistered school application form and documentation that attests that your training meets Yoga Alliance standards.


Certificate of Completion to Become a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT)








Once you have completed your 200 hours, you will receive a certificate of completion from a registered yoga school. You can then register to become a registered yoga teacher by submitting a completed application form, a photocopy of the certificate of completion document and your annual registration fee to the Yoga Alliance. You can then use the Yoga Alliance's registry mark of "Registered Yoga Teacher" on your resume, on your website and in promotional and instructional materials.
