Essential oils are distilled from plants and flowers and can be used to treat a variety of ailments in babies. When buying essential oils be sure to buy true essential oils and not fragrance oils that do not have the same wellness properties and may cause allergies. A little goes a long way and this is especially true when using on a baby's delicate skin, so always dilute essential oils.
Teething Gel
1 oz. vegetable oil or glycerin
1 or 2 drops clove essential oil
Mix one drop of the clove oil with the vegetable oil or glycerin and test on yourself to be sure it is not too strong. If more is needed, add no more than 2 drops. Glycerin is often used in this recipe because it is sweet, unlike vegetable oil.
Colic
2 tbsp. almond oil
2 drops chamomile essential oil
1 drop lavender essential oil
1 drop geranium essential oil
Apply this mixture on your baby's stomach and back to provide relief for abdominal pain.
Cradle Cap
2 tbsp. almond oil
1 drop lemon essential oil
1 drop geranium essential oil
1 drop cedarwood essential oil (optional)
1 drop of sandalwood essential oil (optional)
Apply to the scalp of babies with cradle cap. Rub vigorously but gently and leave in for a few minutes before rinsing.
Homemade Wipes
1/2 cup distilled water
1 tsp. vinegar
1/4 cup aloe vera gel
1 tbsp. calendula essential oil
1 drop lavender essential oil
1 drop tea tree essential oil
This recipe will not only cleanse but also discourage yeast growth. Use with cloth wipes or washcloths. Mix the ingredients together in a covered glass container and either pour over wipes in a wipes warmer or pour in a spray bottle and spray on each wipe before use.
