Migraines are not normal headaches and are accompanied by symptoms other than severe head pains. Sensory disturbances, known as aura, are among these other symptoms and often act as a warning of impending pain. Auras can occur with or without pain in migraines.
Aura Without Pain
Ocular migraines are visual disturbances, such as bright lights or clouded vision, that occur without the associated throbbing migraine pain. They are not serious but can interfere with activities like driving.
Aura With Pain
Flashes of lights and other visual changes can precede, continue with or occur with the excruciating pain of a migraine.
Other Aura Symptoms
Aura is not limited to visual changes. Some people smell strange odors, hear sounds, or feel numb or prickly.
Early Warning
The aura can be a warning of the impending pain and indicate a good time to take abortive medications.
Other Migraine Symptoms
Migraines are not ordinary headaches. The pulsating pain can occur on one or both sides of the head, increase with movement and cause nausea and/or vomiting.
