Herbal Remedies For Sinus Infections

Herbal Remedies for Sinus Infections

Sinus infections are caused when sinus membranes become irritated and swell. They are also called sinusitis. Air and natural secretions are trapped, leading to bacterial growth and infection. Symptoms include fever, chills, headaches, pain, and swelling over the sinuses and nasal congestion. Herbal remedies can reduce the swelling, allowing for drainage and natural healing.

Herbal Teas

Get some anise tea bags and drink one cup three times a day. Prepare an empty tea bag with wild thyme. Drink one cup once or twice a day.

Herbs in Pill Form

Take 250 to 500 milligram tablets of Bromelain three times a day between meals. Try 500 to 1,000 milligram capsules of Cat's claw twice a day.

Lozenges or Syrups

Elderberry, which comes as a liquid or lozenge, will break up mucus and help sinus drainage. Take the liquid as directed on label. Dissolve two lozenges in the mouth three times a day.

Warning

Inflammation of the sinuses in the cheek can be caused by an infection in a tooth or gum disease. In additional to treating the sinusitis, have this possibility checked by a dentist.

Considerations

Glutathione, a natural body antioxidant, levels are depleted in those who have chronic sinusitis. While it isn't an herb, supplementing with additional glutathione and Vitamin C could help.

Alternatives

In addition to herbal remedies for sinus infections, acupuncture may relieve the pain and actually drain the sinuses. Pulsatile nasal irrigation is another method of clearing the sinuses.
