Invisalign Cleaning

Invisialign ® is a popular alternative to braces wherein a removable and customized plastic appliance is used to straighten the teeth. With Invisalign, the poking and prodding of metal wires as well as annoying, unsightly brackets are a thing of the past. However, the aligners need to be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid in unsightly discoloring and odor.

Invisalign Cleaning System

Align Technology Inc., the company behind Invisalign ®, also sells the Invisalign Cleaning System ®, a set of prepackaged "crystals" that turn into a soaking cleaning agent that removes plaque and extraneous debris from the aligners.

The biggest drawback, however, is its cost. Costing about a dollar a day, it can cost upwards of $750 for those who have to wear Invisalign ® long term.

Toothbrush

Using a soft-bristled brush is encouraged to aid in the cleaning of Invisalign ® aligners, though toothpaste should not be used. Toothpastes often contain a variety of abrasives that can lead to scratches and aesthetic deficiencies in the aligners. Instead, plain water or a mix of water and dish washing detergent can clean the aligners effectively without damaging the surface.

Soaking Solutions

According to Animated-Teeth.com, there are a number of soaking solutions that can be effectively used to clean the aligners. Before using any of them, however, it is recommended that you follow directions carefully, making sure to rinse off any leftover cleaning agent before placing the aligners back into your mouth.

SonicBrite / Retainer Brite

These two are commercial cleaning agents that work in much the same way as the Invisalign Cleaning System ® yet at a much cheaper price. In addition to the soaking solution, both of the companies offer a vibrating bath that enhances the effectiveness of the solution.

Denture Cleaning Products

Coming in a variety of forms (tablets, powders, crystals and foams), effervescent denture cleaning products are an extremely cost effective way to clean aligners. In addition to an oxidizing compound that removes stains and kills microorganisms, they also usually contain a chelating (tartar removing) agent and a variety of other properties, such as detergents, enzymes, dyes, flavoring and fragrances.

Homemade Cleaning Solutions

The cheapest way to clean aligners is through a number of homemade diluted solutions. Hydrogen peroxide, bleach or vinegar mixed with water have all shown to be effective cleaning methods. As always, adding a vibrating bath to the mix will enhance the effectiveness of the cleaning method you choose.
