Chinese Herbs for High Blood Pressure


Chinese medicine offers a number of herbs for the treatment of high blood pressure. Chinese medicine focuses on a holistic view of the body and works to manipulate both physical systems and the system of vital energies flowing through the body: the chi. These herbs are often prescribed together, or with other herbs, to help bring the body back into natural balance.


Tien Ma


Tien ma calms the chi and clears the meridians. It is often prescribed for high blood pressure and can also be good for dizziness and numbness of the limbs.


Gou Teng


Gou teng calms the liver and clears liver-heart chi blockages. It is often prescribed for high blood pressure but can also be used to treat dizziness that is caused by low blood pressure.


Mu Li


Mu li can anchor the liver and thus reduce Wind. It is often used for high blood pressure and can help balance the chi.


Du Zhong


Strongly associated with the kidneys and having a positive effect on the liver, du zhong is often prescribed for people with high blood pressure. It increases the chi and is considered a tonic for vital energies.


Dan Shen


Dan shen is used to invigorate the blood and to lower blood pressure, according to a study by the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In addition, National Institutes of Health studies also show that dan shen is effective at thinning the blood and preventing clotting.
