Remove Stretch Marks With Surgery

When a person gains weight rapidly, such as during pregnancy, the skin stretches to accommodate the extra mass. Although the skin has good elasticity, it can reach a point where the lower layers tear instead of stretch, leaving small lines called stretch marks on the surface of the skin. Since these blemishes may never go away, you might want to remove stretch marks with surgery.

Instructions

1. Make an appointment with a plastic surgeon. Find a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area to discuss surgical options for the removal of stretch marks. You can perform an online search through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

2. Discuss a tummy tuck as a way to get rid of stretch marks that appear on the abdomen. To perform a tummy tuck, the surgeon will remove the skin underneath your belly button. Since this is a common area for stretch marks, the blemishes will be removed as well.

3. Determine if laser surgery is an appropriate choice. Laser surgery is less invasive and can be performed anywhere on the body. During the surgery, a laser removes the thin layers of skin, until the damaged layer with the stretch marks is removed. You may need several laser treatments before the stretch marks have fully faded.

4. Remove stretch marks surgically with dermabrasion treatments. Dermabrasion is an outpatient procedure that gets rid of stretch marks by freezing the skin and using an abrasive tool to scrap away the layers of skin.

5. Follow all after-care instructions when you remove stretch marks with surgery. The healing period may take several weeks and involve the use of creams and wraps. At a follow-up appointment, the doctor will evaluate whether the treatment successfully removed your stretch marks.
