Do Decorations In Indian Hair

Decorate your hair with traditional Indian jewelry for special occasions.

Indian women adorn themselves with flowers and hair jewels for weddings and other special occasions. This custom of decorating hair is centuries old. Jewelers make personalized pieces for brides to match their specific dress or traditional jewelry is available for purchase online and in jewelry and department stores. Indian formal events are filled with colorful designs, so choose a hair decoration to complement the color scheme.

Instructions

1. Choose a style for your hair. If it's short, then you may want to grow it for a few months before the event, or have extensions put in. You can buy buns and ponytails that attach to your hair for updos and plaits. In many traditional Indian hairstyles, the hair is worn pulled back away from the face in a long braid, twists or bun.

2. Attach strings of flowers around the base of the bun or ponytail. Flowers are most commonly worn around an updo. If you are wearing a long ponytail or braid, wrap a long chain of flowers around your hair in a spiral. Hold it in place with pins.

3. Clip floral barrettes and clips into hair around the temples and crown of the head for added decoration.

4. Wear a maang tika, the traditional Indian head piece, for your wedding. This is a piece of hair jewelry that hooks to the hair in the hairline and hangs down on the forehead. Larger maang tika have a string of jewels that run the entire hairline, on top of the head, with a loop of jewels that crowns the head. Maang tika can be customized to match your dress and color scheme.

5. Wear a tiara in your hair if you want to go for a non-traditional approach. Tiaras allow you to still honor the custom of hair decoration, but in your own style. Tiaras attach to buns and ponytails. They can also be worn as a headband or crowing the head.

6. Adorn your braid with small jewel clips. If you wear your hair in a long braid, place a jeweled clip every inch or so down the braid.
