Fun Ways To Stay Awake In Class

Boredom and lack of sleep can cause you to snooze in class.

There are the basic methods of staying awake in class: stick to a regular healthy sleep schedule, eat well and exercise regularly. However, if a class is particularly boring or if an exhausting week has taken its toll on you, you will drift off in class despite the best intentions. Find amusing ways to keep yourself alert during class and you will no longer fall asleep.

Take a Shoe Off

Remove one of your shoes before class begins, if your teacher doesn't mind. The foot without a shoe will be cooler in temperature than the foot with a shoe. This temperature imbalance will cause you to be more alert. If you can't take off a shoe, remove one sleeve of a zip-up sweatshirt. Take a break during class, if allowed, to splash your face with cold water. Cool your body down and avoid the drowsiness that often comes with warm temperatures.

Draw Silly Pictures

This method may not go over well in middle or high school; however, in college, you're free to do what you please while the professor is speaking, so long as you're non-disruptive. Listen to the professor and take notes. Reward yourself for paying attention with a quick doodle break. Draw a person or place that makes you laugh. Do not tune out your professor as you draw; use a lull in the lecture to doodle.

Play a Foot Tap Game

If you can tap your feet quietly on the ground without catching the teacher's attention, do so. As you take notes, pay attention at the back of your mind to your feet taps. You become more alert as you concentrate on this task. Tap in the beat to one of your favorite songs. Make up lyrics in your head to the foot-tapping beat that will help you remember the day's lesson. Write a note and tap the note to a beat in your head.

Participate in Class

Whether you find class participation amusing or not, it will not only keep you awake, but it will boost your participation score. If you're unsure about anything the lesson covers, ask a question. Raise your hand whenever the teacher asks for an answer, even if you're not completely confident. You will find that the break in listening to a single teacher talk can keep drowsiness at bay.
