Treat Fibromyalgia With Reflexology

Treat Fibromyalgia With Reflexology

Recent studies have shown that fibromyalgia, a medical disorder characterized by chronic pain throughout the body, may be effectively treated through the use of reflexology, an alternative therapy. Reflexology consists of applying pressure to specific nerve endings on the feet and hands in order to stimulate the flow of energy throughout the body.

Instructions

1. Make an appointment with a knowledgeable and experienced reflexologist in your area to receive a consultation about your fibromyalgia, and whether this type of treatment is a viable option. The reflexologist will discuss the nature of your pain and the precise location of your discomfort and explain to you how reflexology works.

2. Discuss a specific approach with your practitioner when you choose reflexology to treat your fibromyalgia. For instance, you can use reflexology in conjunction with a full-body massage and aromatherapy to enhance the results. You can also target some of the side-effects of fibromyalgia, such as irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety or panic attacks, sleep disorders, myofascial pain and general fatigue.

3. Be prepared for some of the physical reactions you might experience during and after a reflexology session. Some patients may feel nauseous, dizzy or even lethargic after treatment. You may want to keep your schedule clear for a couple of hours after you see a reflexologist, even if you initially feel euphoric or energetic.

4. Obtain a reflexology chart from your practitioner, or from online sources such as the Dorling Kindersley website (see Resources below). This may help you to treat your fibromyalgia on your own or to help a family member who is also suffering from the condition.

5. Use online resources, such as the official website for the Association of Reflexologists, to locate a reflexology practitioner that is convenient to you (see Resources below). You can also obtain more information about how reflexology works, subscribe to reflexology newsletters or even learn become a practitioner yourself.
