As women enter the middle stage of life, their bodies begin to go through menopause. As the body's levels of the hormone estrogen become less, symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, vaginal dryness, weight gain and fatigue can occur. For some women, these symptoms are not severe enough to affect their everyday life. However, in some women, more severe symptoms can disrupt normal activities.
Sleep Deprivation
According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 60 percent of menopausal women suffer from some form of insomnia. However, in some cases, this lack of sleep is prolonged, leading to difficulties functioning. This can lead to drowsiness during the day, irritability and a decreased efficiency of the immune system.
Headaches
Headaches can be brought on by hormonal changes. Some women may develop migraine headaches during menopause, which may require prescription medications to treat.
Mood Changes
While it is natural to experience some mood swings during menopause, some women develop clinical depression or anxiety attacks. If severe enough, medical treatment may be required.
Eye Problems
Some women experience chronic dry eye conditions. This can lead to blurred vision, swollen and red eyelids and sensitivity to light. Prescription medications may be necessary to manage this symptom.
Risk for Other Diseases
Low levels of estrogen at menopause does not place you at risk for developing serious disease. However, your risk for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes goes up as you age and enter menopause.
