Ultrasound is a technique used by physicians, physical therapists and chiropractors to treat pain and inflammation in patients. Home ultrasound machines work in the same way as larger machines found in chiropractic and physical therapy environments.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound machines generate high-frequency sound waves that heat body tissues to warm injured areas, thereby providing relief from pain. Home ultrasound machines produce sound waves at around 1 megahertz.
Head
The sound waves produced by an ultrasound machine are converted to vibrations that are directed to target areas by the head of the machine that is pressed against target areas. Sound waves penetrate the body to a depth of around 1.6 inches in home ultrasound machines.
Treatments
Ultrasound treatments are usually administered over a short period of time to avoid overheating body tissues. Treatments of five to 15 minutes are common, with home ultrasound machines having an automatic shutoff after 30 minutes.
