Strattera is the brand name for the drug atomoxetine. It is a psychotherapeutic drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in both children and adults. Like other psychotherapeutic drugs, Strattera may cause side effects.
Common Side Effects
The most common Strattera side effects in children are nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, upset stomach, dizziness, tiredness, mood swings and slowing of growth.
Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects in children are allergic reactions to Strattera, including hives and swelling.
Other Side Effects
Other side effects are insomnia, headaches, fast heart rate, dry mouth, constipation, sweating, rash, urinary hesitancy or retention, cough, ear infection and rarely liver injury.
Warning
Those who have glaucoma, allergies to anything in Strattera or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor anti-depression medication in the prior 14 days should not take Strattera.
Monitoring
When on Strattera, the child's weight and height should be carefully monitored due to the possibility of growth retardation while on the prescription.
