Mana Breathing Methods

Mana breathing increases energy and relieves mental stress.

Mana breathing is a method of Hawaiian conscious breathwork to optimize physical, mental and spiritual well-being. "Mana" is the Hawaiian word for energy in the Hawaiian Huna system of traditional medicine, and it is this mana that keeps the body and mind in good working condition. Mana breathing methods help to increase energy in the body through oxygenating the blood and awakening the senses and can be performed at home and at work to reduce stress and fatigue.

"Mana" Breath

Simply beginning to breathe consciously can help to increase the amount of energy or "mana" that each breath provides for your entire system. According to Arlyn J. MacDonald, author of the 2003 "Essential Huna," the mana you accumulate with your breathing responds to your will and your intentions. Close your eyes and slow down your breathing. Notice as the breath becomes deeper and longer. When your breathing has become very slow and relaxed, increased mana is accumulating with each breath. The Hawaiians ask their "Unihipili" or spirit to use this increased mana energy as their body needs most.

Holding the Breath

"Ha" Breathing

"Ha" is the Hawaiian word for breathing or exhalation. Ha Breathing involves consciously playing with the breath while inhaling and exhaling, with the purpose of calming the mind, and increases oxygen and energy levels. Inhale as much air as you possibly can, expanding your diaphragm as you inhale. When your lungs are full of air, allow the air to escape, making a "ha" sound through your mouth as you do so. Practice inhaling and exhaling several times and use it as a breathing meditation for when you feel stressed.

Kahuna Cleansing Breath

The Kahuna Cleansing Breath is designed to help cleanse energy in the body, stimulate the cells and clear the lungs. Inhale completely until your lungs are full and then hold your breath for a few seconds. Pucker up your lips as you exhale, forcing the air through your lips quickly for a few seconds and then hold your breath again. Exhale more air and then hold again. This pattern should be repeated until all the air in your lungs is gone and then begin again with a new inhalation.
