Almost nothing is known about Morgellons: what causes it, the treatment, and if it is contagious or not. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) did not start investigating Morgellons until 2008. There are added concerns for veterans, associated with the environmental agents used in warfare, including chemical and biological weapons.
Theories/Speculation
There are many unanswered questions regarding Morgellons disease. The cause of this disease is unknown as well as if those who are afflicted with Morgellons have any common risk factors. It does share some traits with different diseases, such as kidney disease, Lyme disease and schizophrenia. In some cases, antibiotics have helped in its treatment. One theory involves chemical warfare as a main cause, but there is no evidence to prove this.
Identification
Morgellons disease, or unexplained dermopathy as the CDC refers to it, has several broad symptoms which are used to identify it. These symptoms include: rashes, lesions with fibrous material, crawling sensations on and under the skin, memory and vision issues as well as fatigue.
Warnings
As of 2009, the CDC was still analyzing the data and had yet to make any definitive conclusions regarding Morgellons or unexplained dermopathy (skin disease). Therefore, as of 2010, it is impossible to make any concrete conclusions regarding Morgellons. Unfortunately, there is also no distinguishable common thread between cases yet. There are claims that Morgellons is associated with chemical trails sprayed from planes and that veterans may have been infected this way, but there is no credible information to support these claims.
What to Do
In the event that you believe you or someone you know has Morgellons, both the CDC and the Mayo Clinic suggest consulting your doctor. They also suggest being patient and open-minded throughout treatment as doctors try several different treatments.
