Herbs That Cure Psoriasis

Psoriasis is characterized by itchy, scaly, patchy skin, usually on the knees and elbows. It is caused by the rapid turnover of skin cells, three to four times a day on average, rather than the customary 28-day turnover. Finding a treatment plan that works can be frustrating. Hydration of the skin is critically important, and herbs can address internal issues such as poor liver function that may be causing psoriasis flare-ups.

Topical Applications

Although herbs can alleviate some symptoms of psoriasis, they cannot cure it. Herbal ointments can slow the process and stop the spread of the psoriasis. Cooling creams can relieve some of the burning and itching. Calendula and comfrey are two popular ingredients in herbal preparations that calm the skin, prevent it from drying out and ease inflammation. Both of these herbs can also reverse and repair damage from psoriasis. You can find creams that contain these ingredients at your health food store. Apply a thin coat of cream twice a day. Avoid applying to cracked, raw or bleeding skin.

A standby moisturizer that works well on psoriasis is aloe vera. Look for the pure gel with no additives. Smooth some of the aloe gel onto the dry patches three times a day. This should help reduce and heal lesions.

Treating the Liver

Although psoriasis is basically caused by a rapid turnover of skin cells, other factors, including the inability of the body to rid itself of toxins, can play a role. This affects the ability of skin cells to regenerate effectively. Because the liver acts as the main filter in the body, it is important to make sure it is working effectively. Milk thistle has an active ingredient called silymarin, which is an anti-oxidant that targets liver tissue. By boosting the liver's ability to clean blood and remove toxins, milk thistle can prevent psoriasis from getting worse. Look for milk thistle in capsule form in your health food store. Take 150 mg. three times a day.

Curbing Inflammation

Reduce inflammation by incorporating licorice into your herbal treatment program. Licorice has strong anti-inflammatory agents, comparing favorably to conventional anti-inflammatory drugs such as hydrocortisone. Look for pure licorice extract that resembles thick molasses. It generally is available in 1- to 2-oz. bottles in health food stores. Take a teaspoon three times a day during a flare-up.

While herbal treatments for psoriasis may provide some relief, if you continue to have symptoms, consult with your physician for other treatment options.
