Many industrial workplaces use liquids that are flammable. To protect against fires, special regulations are in place regarding the type of cabinets that can be used to store these substances.
Standards
The standards regulating storage of flammable substances are set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA. These standards apply to all industries.
Construction
All sides of a flammable storage cabinet must be constructed of steel, gauge 18 or thicker. Joints on the cabinet must be riveted or welded.
Doors
Cabinet doors must latch on at least three separate points. The sill of the door must be raised a minimum of two inches above the bottom of the cabinet, to hold any substances that spill.
Signage
In order to comply with OSHA standards, the cabinet must display a sign with the words "Flammable, Keep Fire Away." Additionally, a fire symbol should be displayed.
Features
Any doors on a cabinet housing flammable liquids is required to have a self-closing feature.
