The spleen lies in the upper quadrant of the abdomen. It's a vital digestive and lymphatic organ. It fights infections and helps regulate the amount of blood circulating in the body. The spleen also destroys pathogens and old cells.

Eat Raw Fruits and Vegetables

Eat a wide variety of raw fruits and vegetables each day. Raw foods were consumed by our ancestors for thousands of years. The spleen is accustomed to a good amount of raw food. Raw foods contain vitamins and enzymes which help the spleen function better. The spleen is a cleansing organ and raw produce helps the spleen detoxify the body. Taking digestive enzymes with your food will help your spleen even more.

Foods to Avoid

Avoid fast food, processed and fatty foods. Foods such as these, with little nutritional value, are not good for your spleen. This vital organ needs nourishing foods. Fatty and processed foods clog the spleen, making it sluggish. The spleen must work harder to cleanse the body of waste produced by these unhealthy foods.


Drink eight to ten glasses of water each day. The spleen is a major part of the lymphatic system, which aids in cleansing and immunity. When the body becomes dehydrated, the digestive and lymphatic systems slow and waste lingers in the body. More waste leads to more damage from toxins which can affect your complexion, cause weight gain and even lead to disease.

Healthy Fats and Oils

Eat a variety of healthy fats and oils. The spleen needs healthy fat, such as Omega-3 fatty acids, to function properly. These are found in sunflower seeds, almonds, eggs and salmon. You can supplement Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet with cod liver oil, found at health food stores.
