Safe Sugar Free Ingredients

Scientists question the nutritional value of white sugar.

Sugar is a much maligned dietary substance in today's society, yet the debate still needs some clarity as to why this is the case, and what are the most suitable replacements. According to "Web MD" website, scientists claim that refined (white) sugar is linked to higher cholesterol levels, and also to the onset of Diabetes Mellitus. These links, they argue, are not directly related to moderate sugar consumption, but to the effects of obesity from consuming too much sugar. The good news is that it is possible to reduce the amount of refined sugar that is eaten daily, while still adding sweetness to the daily diet.

Agave Syrup

Agave syrup is a low-glycemic index sweetener. It has a high fructose content and a low glucose content. According to "Nutrition and Metabolism" website, fructose is metabolized by the liver, and glucose is metabolized by insulin production, which may cause high blood-sugar levels, mood swings and eventually, Diabetes Mellitus. Agave syrup is a useful substitute for people with Diabetes, who are advised to avoid sugar. It can be used in home-baking and in hot drinks, in place of sugar.

Dried Fruits

Figs, dates, raisins, sultanas and apricots are very sweet fruits that can be added in their dried form to home baking, or eaten straight from the packet with a handful of nuts, as a nutritious snack. For home baking, a cupful of dried fruit can be steeped for 20 minutes in a half cup of boiling water, then liquidized. This makes an excellent, nutritious replacement for sugar.

Rice syrup

A macrobiotic staple, rice syrup is produced from fermented rice. It is a low-calorie, chemical-free, unprocessed sweetener that works excellently in place of sugar. It is also rich in B vitamins, making it a healthy dietary addition for the nervous system.

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is produced from the sap of the black or red maple tree. The tree is pierced to allow the sap to run out and be collected. It is then boiled so that the excess water evaporates, and the concentrated solution contains the characteristic maple syrup taste. It is low in calories, and high in nutrients such as zinc.
