Dangers Of Plastic Surgery In Developing Teens

Because teens are still developing, many physicians warn against the dangers of plastic surgery for their age group. Many doctors will require that the patient reach a certain age before performing certain surgeries.

Types of Surgeries

Breast augmentation, liposuction and cheek augmentation are generally not performed on teens.

Time Frame

After the age of 18, most plastic surgeons will agree to perform breast augmentation, liposuction and cheek augmentation procedures on a patient.

Considerations

Breast augmentation is not done because the teen's breasts are still developing and the surgery may not prove necessary. Liposuction is not recommended since it may be baby fat and not a serious weight issue. Cheek implants may distort a teen's appearance since facial features may still be developing.

Misconceptions

Many teens feel that plastic surgery will fix their appearance. However, since their bodies are still developing, the surgery may need correction after they have passed adolescence.

Warning

Developing teens may suffer from a body dysmorphic disorder if they start to get plastic surgery too young and become obsessed with wanting more surgeries.
