Windows Diagnostic Tools

Windows has many different tools, each tailored to specific issues that can arise with the operating system and its functions. Registry errors, disk errors, Internet problems--Windows has a tool for the problem.


Chkdsk


Chkdsk is the standard disk error checking and repairing utility for MS-DOS version 1 through 6, and NT-based Windows operating systems, from Windows NT through Windows 7.








Fixboot


Fixboot is used to fix the boot sector of a hard drive when it has become corrupted. It was introduced with Windows 2000 but can be used with Windows NT as well.


Fixmbr


Fixmbr is used to fix the MBR (Master Boot Record) on an NTFS (New Technology File System) hard disk drive. Fixmbr was introduced with Windows 2000 but can be used on Windows NT as well.


DXDiag


DXDiag is the DirectX Diagnostic utility. It has been part of DirectX since its release with Windows 95 OSR2. DXDiag is used to check the various functions of DirectX and make sure that they are up to date and fully functioning.


ScanDisk








ScanDisk is the disk checking and error correcting utility that was released beginning at MS-DOS version 6.2 and continued through Windows Me.


Dr. Watson


Dr. Watson is the catchall diagnostic tool for Windows. It is used to open and inspect crash dump files and error logs created by windows whenever there is a application or driver crash or other error in Windows.
