The Properties Of Pink Quartz

Rose and pink quartz are generally considered the same, despite slight differences.

The first recorded mention of pink quartz was in a 1938 book "Quartz Family Minerals" based on a discovery of the pinkish crystals in Maine. It didn't become widely known, however, until it was discovered in Brazil in 1939. These days the terms "pink quartz" and "rose quartz" are generally used interchangeably, although there are mineralogists who would argue they are two distinct varieties. Nevertheless, the properties of pink quartz and rose quartz are mostly the same, with a few slight distinctions.

Differences

Unlike rose quartz, pink quartz is light sensitive and will turn pale when exposed to direct sunlight. The color of pink quartz comes from different elements than that of rose quartz: traces of aluminum and phosphorus in pink quartz; titanium and thallium in rose quartz. Most significantly, perhaps, only pink quartz grows crystal formations.

Physical Properties

As a member of the quartz family, pink quartz has a 7 hardness, a 2.65 specific gravity and grows in a hexagonal configuration. It typically appears in clusters of small crystals growing parallel to one another. Considered a cloudy gemstone, clarity is not usually one of the characteristics used to determine the quality of different specimens. True pink quartz is extremely rare and so is not often polished, engraved or made into jewelry. It is more often sold in its original form to gemstone collectors.

Metaphysical Properties

Pink quartz is associated with the fourth chakra. Chakra is the energy center of the body in yoga, and is used to help channel the energy associated with this chakra, also known as the heart chakra. This includes qualities of unconditional love and inner peace. It is used to help in both the giving and receiving of love and to heal emotional wounds from heartbreak, cruelty, loneliness or a lack of love. The color gives it a soothing effect while being in the quartz family gives it an intense and dynamic power. It is associated with the zodiac signs Taurus and Libra, the planet Venus and the element of Earth.

Healing Properties

Pink quartz is said to have healing benefits for the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, thymus gland, rib cage and thoracic cavity. It is believed to help with weight loss and recovery from injury as well as to help lower blood pressure. It is used to improve the complexion of the skin, rejuvenating skin cells and removing wrinkles. Women may use pink quartz to enhance fertility or prevent miscarriage.
